Major Cities

Sri Lanka, an unpretentious island at the foot of the vast Indian subcontinent, is a welcome surprise for visitors. It has a strong culture, a diverse religious landscape, and a cuisine to match. These are enough grounds to entice the tourist.

Since the tourism locations are scattered throughout Sri Lanka, the majority of the country is of interest to tourists. The capital, Colombo, the southern point of Galle, the cool hills of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, and the Buddhist circuit of Anuradhapura and surrounding areas are the most well-traveled. Almost the entire eastern coast is ideal for beachside enjoyment, with Trincomalee and Hikkadua serving as popular tourist destinations.

Negombo

Negombo, the fastest coastal escape from the capital, Colombo, is popular with both tourists and locals. If you don't have time to tour Sri Lanka's vast coastline, this will certainly give you a taste. Expect a leisurely environment and a plethora of high-end resorts that can be easily booked, even for a single day.

Colombo

Sri Lanka's capital city is a cultural melting pot, influenced by its Buddhist, Tamil, and colonial traditions. What remains is a magnificent blend of the new and ancient, one that immediately puts the traveller in the mood for a 'home away from home'. Much of the warmth stems from the pleasant Sri Lankans, who are always willing to converse.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, a historic town, was previously Sri Lanka's capital. It still has well-preserved ruins that serve as reminders of the country's history. This, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long been the centre of Theravada Buddhism and a popular religious destination. The city exudes a calm, spiritual aura.

Polonnaruwa

Expect to be immersed in history when visiting Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second most ancient kingdom. Visitors continue to be fascinated by its archaeological treasures. Hundreds of artefacts dot the town, making it an ideal destination for history buffs. Tombs, statues, stupas, and other monuments constitute the main attraction. Polunnaruwa is also located near the country's national parks, which adds to the natural splendour of the experience.

Passikudah

If you've ever longed to stroll knee-deep into the sea for a long time, here is the location. Passikudah is a beach vacation town with the world's longest stretch of shallow coastline. It's no surprise that tourists chose here as the ideal place to unwind. It is located on the island country's eastern coast and is easily accessible to the rest of the country's sandy hot spots.
